Protecting Cheetahs
Protecting Cheetahs: Ending Illegal Trade and Exploitation
Cheetah populations in Somalia are teetering on the brink of collapse due to the rampant illegal wildlife trade and escalating human-wildlife conflicts. Among the most pressing threats is the trafficking of cheetah cubs, driven by the demand for exotic pets in regions such as the Middle East. Tragically, it is estimated that around 300 cheetah cubs are smuggled out of Somalia each year, most of whom perish due to the harsh conditions of captivity and transportation.
The illegal wildlife trade not only devastates cheetah populations but also undermines ecosystems, fuels organized crime, and threatens Somalia’s natural heritage. This crisis highlights the urgent need for collective action to halt these destructive practices.
To address this issue, SEV (Saving Endangered Voices) has partnered with key stakeholders, including Somalia's Ministry of Environment and Wildlife, local communities, and international conservation organizations. Together, we are implementing a multi-faceted approach to safeguard cheetahs and combat the illegal trade.
